Mark Braidwood, in a letter to his wife Mary, who was still in Scotland getting ready to give birth, says "We are in a settlement of about 200 Scotchmen, all within a few miles of us."
This was obviously an estimate and does not tell us how many surnames were represented, but it does show that the numbers, by 1842, when the letter was written, were large. Below, I listed surnames in alphabetical order. The core families are highlighted; these are the clans that had many family members (who owned a lot of land), and who essentially populated the settlement. In many cases, surnames of wives who came with their husbands and children, appear only once. In some cases, individuals who never married worked and died in the settlement (or moved out after a short stay).
